AI is not the Whole Story: Why Story is Part of Strategy
People are increasingly using AI at work. But technology is not the whole story.
Gallup's latest research shows 52% of US employees now use AI at work, and 30% use it regularly. That's a real shift, not a future prediction — it's happening.
But only 25% say their organisation has communicated a clear plan for it. So, we're moving faster than we're explaining.
What happens in that gap
It isn't always down to the technology. The fog of unclear expectations and lack of clarity creates real anxiety.
Researchers call this technostress — the strain people feel when they're expected to keep up with new tools faster than anyone has helped them understand why, or how. A recent review of the evidence (Wankhede & Khandelwal, 2026) found that technostress, paired with emotional exhaustion, is strongly linked to worse employee wellbeing.
The real culprit usually isn't the technology itself. It's the lack of communication and clarity around it. When expectations aren't clear, new tools create real anxiety — not because people can't adapt, but because they're being asked to adapt without being told what they're adapting to.
It's not fixed — it depends on us
AI's impact on wellbeing isn't set in stone. It depends on how well we explain it, and how ready we make people to actually work with it.
That's not a technology problem. It's a change problem — and change has always needed more than a rollout plan.
Good change needs clarity, context, capability, connection — and a story people can see themselves in.
Story is part of strategy
Storytelling isn't the soft bit around the strategy. It's part of how the strategy becomes real. A story people can see themselves in can ease technostress and build clarity, because it answers the question employees are actually asking underneath all the uncertainty: what does this mean for me?
It's no longer a question of if we adopt AI. It's a question of how we do this — and how, in practice, means finding the story your people can actually see themselves in.
What's the story your people are being asked to join?
